ANDRE CADERE: ALL WALKS OF LIFE. Cornelia Lauf et al. Institute for Contemporary Art, P.S. 1 Museum, Long Island City, 1989. Published 1992. Published in association with Musee d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris and La Chambre, Ghent. 180 pp. with 87 ills. (21 col.). 27 x 22 cm. ISBN 9072893115 Bilingual in French and English.
Offering a substantial appraisal of the unusual career of Paris-based Polish artist Cadere (1934-1978), this catalogue includes illustrations of many of the portable rods of colored wooden spools that constitute his sculptural oeuvre while also documenting their use by the artist in a long series of subversive "interventions" at art exhibitions and other events. A text by Cadere describing the system of permutations and intentional "errors" embodied in his works augments five essays analyzing the significance of the bar sculptures and examining the artist's provocative activities in the context of the Conceptual art movement of the 1970s.
