THE LIFE AND ART OF ESPHYR SLOBODKINA. Tufts University Art Gallery, Medford, 1992. 80 pp. with 75 ills. (38 col.). 21 x 26 cm. LC 91-39607 ISBN 1880593017 In English.
Providing the first substantial study of the modernist oeuvre of Russian-born artist Slobodkina (b. 1908), a founding member of the American Abstract Artists in New York in 1937, this catalogue reproduces nearly 50 collage-like paintings dating from 1927 to 1991 along with a selection of some 30 sculptures and other works. Two essays trace Slobodkina's career (noting the influence of Miro, Klee and Bolotowsky on her biomorphic and geometric abstractions) and examine her Dada-like sculptural assemblages of machine parts and other found objects.
