Surveying the little-studied achievements of Australian women artists of the late 19th century, this catalogue documents an exhibition of some 60 paintings and several other works dating from the 1870s to the early 20th century, including landscapes, portraits, interiors and genre compositions executed in a variety of Impressionist and naturalistic styles. Biographical essays on the 19 featured artists supplement introductory texts discussing their exploration of plein-air techniques and examining their careers in the context of the early feminist movement in Australia.
