FATA MORGANA USA: THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE -- JOSEP RENAU. Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, 1992. Copyright 1991. Organized (in association with Fundacio Josep Renau) and published by Institut Valencia d'Art Modern, Centre Julio Gonzalez, Valencia. First published 1989. 128 pp. with 125 ills. (63 col.). ISBN 8478905820 Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Constituting an expanded version of a book originally published in 1967 by Renau (1907-1982), a Spanish artist who spent much of his life as a political exile in Mexico and East Germany, this volume features some 70 photomontages produced from 1952 to 1966 in which Renau combined images drawn from such sources as Life and The New York Times to form scathing, often surreal commentaries on capitalism, racism, militarism and sexism in the United States. Excellent reproductions of the featured works are accompanied by excerpts from diverse literary and historical texts and a statement by Renau illuminating his objectives.
