Chronicling the activities of the Societe des incoherents, an informal group of avant-garde Parisian writers and artists who, led by publisher Jules Levy (1857-1935), mounted anti-Salon exhibitions from 1882 to 1893, this catalogue presents a diverse assortment of journal illustrations, posters, printed invitations, catalogues and documents along with three essays exploring the origins of the group (which included such artists as Jules Cheret and Adolphe Willette) and evaluating the humorously iconoclastic character of their publications and exhibitions.
