Documenting an exhibition of modernist paintings which were among the more than 600 works confiscated by the Nazis in 1937 from the Stadel's holdings, this catalogue features full-page color reproductions and individual discussions of 33 landscapes, portraits, still lifes and figure studies by Beckmann, Kirchner, Modersohn-Becker and other German artists as well as canvases by such painters as Matisse, Klee, Braque, Rouault and Munch. Six essays discuss the Stadel's progressive acquisition policies prior to World War II and the collecting of contemporary art by museums throughout Germany in the interwar period.
