DOWN TO EARTH: BOYLE FAMILY IN NEW ZEALAND. Auckland City Art Gallery, 1990. Distributed in the U.S.A. by University of Washington Press, Seattle. 64 pp. with 26 ills. (15 col., 3 foldout). 24 x 22 cm. ISBN 0864631782 In English.
Surveying works created over the past decade by British artists Mark Boyle (b. 1934), Joan Hills (b. 1936) and their children, this catalogue includes full-page color reproductions of thirteen of the family's distinctive "earthprobes" -- hyperrealistic, painted fiber-glass reliefs replicating randomly selected plots of ground throughout the world. A critical essay noting the relationship of the Boyles' unique oeuvre to such movements as Earth art, Arte Povera and process art is augmented by Mark Boyle's description of the family's 1990 trip to New Zealand to produce a series of three ground castings.
