Exploring the revival and transformation of formal garden design in turn-of-the-century France and highlighting the work of prolific and influential French landscape architect Achille Duchene (1866-1947), this catalogue presents plans, drawings and numerous historical photographs illustrating urban gardens of the period, among them a notable series of private gardens in Boulogne designed by Duchene for financier Albert Kahn. Six essays discuss the innovative synthesis of geometric and informal elements reflected in Duchene's gardens while also describing the works of other Belle Epoque landscape designers and their influence on the development of the modern architectural garden.
