Features full-page reproductions of 60 calotype images of the village of Newhaven (many previously unpublished) produced between 1843 and 1847 by well-known Scottish artists David Octavius Hill (1802-1870) and Robert Adamson (1821-1848), whose portrayals of the town and its inhabitants constituted a pioneering use of photography for social documentation. The catalogue's eleven-part text includes discussions of the artistic, historical and sociological contexts of the project and of such issues as the narrative structure of the series and the photographers' emphasis on realistic rather than picturesque views.
