Ten essays examine the life, reign and legacy of Marie de' Medici (1573-1642), presenting a careful study of the French Queen's extensive patronage of the arts and of the palace designed for her by Salomon de Brosse. Among the more than 200 paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures illustrated in the catalogue are numerous portraits and other works by artists associated with the French court, among them Van Dyck, Vouet, Callot and Rubens (who produced a series of 24 allegorical paintings tracing the Queen's life), as well as topographical views and plans and elevations of the Palace.
