Presents a review of figurative paintings of the 1980s by Toronto artist Tod (b. 1953), whose provocative commentaries on issues of racial, sexual and personal identity are frequently based on imagery appropriated from photographs and mass-media sources. Two essays closely analyze Tod's manipulation of stereotypes and generic narrative forms in the context of recent international trends while also discussing her position in the Toronto art world and the critical reception of her work.
