JAMES WARD R.A., 1769-1859. Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, 1991. 76 pp. with 68 ills. (12 col.). 25 x 21 cm. In English.
Documenting the first exhibition devoted to works on paper by Ward, a neglected British Romantic artist known mainly for his paintings of horses and cattle, this catalogue presents 55 drawings and 13 prints produced during the early decades of the 19th century which include anatomical and figure drawings, portraits, landscapes and numerous animal studies. An introductory essay discussing Ward's difficult career and his achievements as a draughtsman and printmaker is followed by fine reproductions of the featured sheets (many of them accompanied by brief annotations) and two short commentaries reviewing the artist's printed oeuvre.
