The first significant review of the brief but successful career of a French Salon painter killed during the Franco-Prussian War, this catalogue presents 79 paintings, drawings and oil sketches by Regnault selected chiefly from French private collections, including historical, mythological and religious subjects and numerous expressive studies of exotic figures and Orientalist scenes. Features scholarly commentaries on the exhibited works, a biographical chronology, and an essay discussing the artist's early studies in Rome, his travels in Spain and North Africa, and the conflict of traditional and progressive styles reflected in his oeuvre.
