ABSTRACT DESIGN IN AMERICAN QUILTS: A BIOGRAPHY OF AN EXHIBITION. Jonathan Holstein. Museum of History and Science, Louisville, 1991. Organized and published by Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc., Louisville. 230 pp. with 88 ills. (77 col.). 29 x 25 cm. LC 92-128277 ISBN 188058400X In English.
Documents the recreation of a ground-breaking 1971 exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, presenting excellent reproductions of 61 abstract quilts (dating mainly from the 19th century) that were selected according to purely aesthetic criteria to promote appreciation of quiltmaking as an art form. Individual commentaries on the works and a lengthy text by a principal curator of the original show trace the development of the exhibition and its far-reaching influence.
