Featuring illustrations of plans, elevations and models of the new extension to the National Gallery designed by American architects Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates as well as fine photographs of the completed structure, this publication presents a five-part text describing the architectural history of the Gallery, the various designs for additions to the main building proposed since the 1950s, the process by which an architect for the Sainsbury Wing was selected, and the character of the final design. Two additional essays discuss the collection of Early Renaissance paintings the extension was created to house and examine the building's innovative lighting design.
