Although documenting a slightly different selection of works drawn from a private German collection, this publication is essentially an English translation of Die fruhen Meister: Japanische Holzschnitte von 1680 bis 1750 (Worldwide 21537), the catalogue of a 1988 Frankfurt exhibition presenting some 60 works from the early period of the ukiyo-e tradition, including portraits of actors and courtesans, landscapes, and other images. Scholarly descriptions and full-page illustrations of the exhibited works are preceded by a brief historical essay.
