VIEWPOINTS: EUROPEAN SCULPTURE, 1875-1925. Robert Kashey et al. Shepherd Gallery, New York, 1991. 144 pp. with 63 ills. 24 x 21 cm. In English.
Examining the impact of the formalist theories of German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand (1847-1921) on the development of modernist aesthetics, this notable sales catalogue presents two stylistically opposed groups of figurative sculptures: 20 works by such artists as Rodin, Carpeaux and Saint-Gaudens conceptualized and intended to be viewed in the round, and 40 sculptures by Hildebrand, Barlach, Kollwitz, Manship, Maillol, Lehmbruck and others reflecting an emphasis on planar surfaces and a single perspective. Informative analyses and full-page reproductions of the exhibited pieces are accompanied by concise biographical texts on the artists, a discussion of Hildebrand's career, a reprinted contemporaneous critique of his widely read treatise on sculpture (1893), and an essay on Rodin's techniques written by Hildebrand in 1918.
