OP DUNCAN PHILLIPS COLLECTS: PARIS BETWEEN THE WARS. Elizabeth Hutton Turner. Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., 1991. 64 pp. with 54 ills. (10 col.). 28 x 22 cm. LC 91-30904 ISBN 0943044162 In English.
The second in a series of catalogues charting the formation of the Phillips Collection in the early decades of the 20th century (see also Worldwide 53783), this publication chronicles the transformation of the collector's initially dismissive view of French Modernist painting, tracing his enthusiastic acquisition of notable works by Matisse, Rouault, Bonnard, Picasso and Braque during the 1920s and 30s. A substantial essay describes the course of Phillips's conversion to a progressive aesthetic viewpoint and details his collecting activities during the period.
