Surveys the diverse conceptually oriented oeuvre of American artist Piper (b. 1948), whose works confronting issues related to gender and race (often founded on her personal experiences as a woman of mixed racial heritage) include charcoal drawings on newspaper and multi-part installations of appropriated photographs overlaid with text. Illustrations of 29 works dating from the late 1960s to 1990 are accompanied by two critical essays (one reprinted) and a 1987 commentary by Piper describing her artistic development and encounters with prejudice.
