JESSICA STOCKHOLDER. Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, 1991. Organized and published in association with Renaissance Society, University of Chicago. 48 pp. with 45 ills. (35 col.). 32 x 24 cm. ISBN 9073362121 Bilingual in English and Dutch.
Presents photographs and individual descriptions of twelve site-specific installations produced from 1983 to 1991 by American artist Stockholder (b. 1959) in which such objects as discarded appliances, used clothing and painted bales of hay are assembled in awkward, sprawling wooden constructions overlaid with carpet remnants, newspaper, sheetrock and other materials. A critical essay positions Stockholder's work in the context of formalist aesthetics and assemblage art traditions.
