Provides an extensive study of the careers and achievements of Russian-born dancer, choreographer and designer Alexander Sacharoff (1886-1963) and his wife Clothilde (1892-1974), internationally prominent figures in avant-garde dance from the 1910s through the 30s. Illustrations and photographs of flamboyant costume and set designs by Alexander and numerous documentary and performance images of the dancers accompany nine essays examining their broad-ranging activities, the Expressionist aesthetic they espoused, and their close links to such artists as Kandinsky and Jawlensky.
