MAGGI HAMBLING: AN EYE THROUGH A DECADE, 1981-1991. Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, 1991. 72 pp. with 39 ills. (19 col.). 30 x 20 cm. LC 91-75249 ISBN 0930606663 In English.
Best known for her expressive portraits and figurative compositions in the tradition of Francis Bacon, British artist Hambling (b. 1945) has recently adopted a vigorous gestural style of abstraction in her interpretations of nature, dreams and laughter. Including two essays describing the immediacy of Hambling's approach and the emotive elements of her themes, this catalogue illustrates a selection of some 40 watercolors, drawings and paintings that encompasses several of her portraits and life sketches but is dominated by explorations of abstraction.
