Surveys the multifaceted oeuvre of Melbourne artist Rooney (b. 1937), a key figure in the Neo-Dada movement in Australia during the late 1950s and 60s whose works encompass abstract pattern paintings related to Pop and Op art, conceptually oriented serial photographs, and ironic collage-like compositions employing imagery variously based on Bauhaus typography, World War II propaganda posters and popular culture. Illustrations of some 60 works accompany a selection of texts by the artist, a detailed biographical chronology, and four essays discussing Rooney's significant role in the Australian avant-garde, his experiments with improvisational music and his links to Pop art.
