DAVID RABINOWITCH: THE GRAVITATIONAL VEHICLES, 1965. Whitney Davis. Galerie nachst St. Stephan, Vienna, 1990. Published 1991. Published in association with Galerie Renos Xippas, Paris. 134 pp. with 121 ills. 31 x 22 cm. LC 92-175714 ISBN 3850420515 In English; two essays also in German.
Focusing on an unusual series of large steel sculptures designed in 1965 by noted Canadian artist Rabinowitch (b. 1943), this catalogue documents some 50 original sketches for the works and seven of the completed pieces, five of which were fabricated specifically for the Vienna exhibition. The concepts underlying the sculptures (each an open box-like structure housing a suspended cone, cylinder or other geometric element) are illuminated in diverse texts by the artist and in a critical essay examining Rabinowitch's complex allusions to the theories of Galileo, Kepler, Kant and Darwin and to the artistic experiments of Duchamp and the Constructivists.
