Presenting advertising and public service posters, satirical prints and caricatures, trade cards, bookplates and other illustrated ephemera from an extensive private collection donated to the Museum, this catalogue surveys the public image of the medical profession in Europe and America during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Three essays discussing the promotion of medicine in posters, medical themes and imagery in caricatures, and the use of varied printed materials in the profession are supplemented by descriptive commentaries accompanying illustrations of 162 works, which include etchings and lithographs by such artists as Gillray, Cruikshank, Rowlandson, Daumier and Cheret.
