Examines the impact of the radically objective style pioneered by German photographers Bernd (b. 1931) and Hilla Becher (b. 1934) on the work of six of their former students at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf through a fine pictorial presentation of more than 50 photographs, including serial views of the night sky by Ruff, studies of museum visitors by Struth and images of factory workplaces by Gursky. Two critical essays describe the conceptual and stylistic concerns of the photographers in the context of the typological principles embodied in the Bechers' well-known depictions of industrial structures, examples of which are also included.
