Issued in conjunction with the Gallery's partial remounting of Marcel Duchamp's first retrospective (exhibited in 1963 at the Pasadena Art Museum), this publication extensively reviews the artist's involvement with and influence on the West Coast art community. Five informative essays discuss San Francisco dealer Frederic Torrey and his acquisition of Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase at the 1913 Armory Show; the artist's long friendship with California collectors Louise and Walter Arensberg; his participation in a 1949 symposium on modern art held in San Francisco; the history of the Pasadena retrospective; and the broad influence of Duchamp on such West Coast artists as Nauman, Ruscha, Burden, Baldessari and Wiley. Includes illustrations of several works by Duchamp, numerous documentary photographs, excerpts from the 1949 symposium discussions, and notes on other West Coast events related to the artist.
