VALADIER: THREE GENERATIONS OF ROMAN GOLDSMITHS -- AN EXHIBITION OF DRAWINGS AND WORKS OF ART. David Carritt Limited, London, 1991. 184 pp. with 120 ills. (110 col.). 28 x 22 cm. In English.
Chiefly documenting designs from the workshop of Luigi Valadier (1726-1785) -- one of the foremost Italian goldsmiths of the 18th century -- but also including drawings by his father Andrea, his brother Giovanni and his son Giuseppe, this sales catalogue reproduces some 90 sketches and working drawings for Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical chalices, tureens, picture frames, inkstands and other decorative objects, many of the sheets drawn from a notable album of the family's designs compiled in the early 19th century. Fine color reproductions of the drawings and of 20 finished pieces attributed to the Valadiers are accompanied by commentaries on the works, a checklist of all 144 drawings in the album, a chronology of the designers' careers, and two introductory texts which discuss their drawing techniques and the history and significance of the album.
