Features reproductions of some 160 paintings, drawings and prints by 48 French artists (including Maillol, Vuillard, Dufy, Matisse, Gleizes, Van Dongen, Toulouse-Lautrec, Serusier, Denis and Vallotton) who were among the many avant-garde figures represented in Toulouse exhibitions from the 1890s to 1914. An introductory essay describing the significance of the progressive shows is supplemented by a short discussion of the crucial role of art critic and collector Charles Malpel (1874-1926) in organizing the exhibitions and a text by Malpel analyzing the character of modern painting.
