Reviewing the progression of Dutch Symbolism from the visionary and religious works of such late 19th-century artists as Toorop and Thorn Prikker to the early abstractions of Mondrian and Van Doesburg in the 1910s, this catalogue documents some 100 drawings, prints, paintings and other works by 29 artists. An introductory essay examines the history of Dutch Symbolism and its connections to the mystical doctrines of Theosophy, particularly as reflected in the aesthetic theories developed by Mondrian and other early Dutch abstract artists.
