KATARZYNA KOBRO, 1898-1951. Stadtisches Museum Abteiberg, Monchengladbach, 1991. Organized in association with Muzeum Sztuki, Lodz. Published by Wienand Verlag, Cologne. 104 pp. with 61 ills. (28 col.). 28 x 22 cm. ISBN 3879092621 Bilingual in German and English (one essay in German only).
Documents the first exhibition devoted to the pioneering sculptural oeuvre of Russian-born Polish artist Kobro, reappraising her exploration of the spatial principles of Unism, a radical Constructivist theory extending the work of Malevich and Tatlin which she developed during the 1920s and 30s in collaboration with her husband, painter Wladislaw Strzeminski (1893-1952). Illustrating a selection of some 20 sculptures, most of them geometric sheet-metal compositions bearing strong affinities to minimalist aesthetics, the informative catalogue features three critical essays (one reprinted) along with three theoretical texts by Kobro and excerpts from a 1931 treatise on Unism written jointly by the artist and Strzeminski.
