Accompanying an exhibition of some 225 coins, illuminated manuscripts, stone statues, gold reliquaries and other objects, this catalogue explores the cultural and political history of Brittany under the Montfort dukes from their ascendancy in the mid-14th century through the time of Anne of Brittany (1477-1514), the last sovereign to rule the region as an independent state and a notable patron of the arts. Numerous color reproductions accompanied by descriptive commentaries document the exhibited works, which are presented in conjunction with 17 texts examining specific aspects of Breton art, architecture, and religious, economic and political history.
