Including many works not previously exhibited in the West, this catalogue presents an array of 100 objects (including costumes and regalia, jewelry, elaborate vessels in gold and silver, armor and weaponry, medals and icons) which reflect the diverse Russian traditions affected by the country's reorientation toward Western Europe during the early reign of Peter the Great (1672-1725). Scholarly commentaries on the works and texts discussing the individual art forms represented are supplemented by four essays examining Peter's life, his introduction of Western influences to Russia, the cultural and artistic context on the eve of his far-reaching reforms, and the development of the country's decorative arts during the 17th century.
