The first extensive examination of Schinkel's activities in Cologne, Aachen, Dusseldorf and other Rhineland cities, this catalogue highlights some 25 building and reconstruction projects undertaken by the Berlin architect (1781-1841), presenting individual descriptions of the featured works as well as illustrations of sketches and views by Schinkel and other architects and artists. Four essays include discussions of the Rhineland's status as a Prussian territory after 1815, Schinkel's association with his patron Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, and detailed chronicles of the architect's travels in the region which incorporate numerous excerpts from his journals.
