Reviews varied explorations of personal identity and objective reality in photography of the 1980s through a presentation of more than 100 images by 17 international artists and artist teams, including large-scale individual and group portraits by Roland Fischer, Patrick Faigenbaum, Thomas Ruff and Humberto Rivas; investigations of the institutions of politics and art by Alfredo Jaar, Louise Lawler and Gunther Forg; and staged and constructed photographs by Boyd Webb, Sandy Skoglund, Cindy Sherman and Patrick Tosani. Brief commentaries on the artists and full-page reproductions are accompanied by three analytical essays discussing the aesthetic and philosophical issues addressed in the exhibited works.
