OP LEE UFAN. Hara Museum ARC, Gunma, 1991. Organized by Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Published in association with Foundation Arc-en-Ciel, Tokyo. 66 pp. with 47 ills. (19 col., one foldout). 25 x 23 cm. Bilingual in Japanese and English.
Surveying abstract paintings and sculptures created chiefly since the late 1970s by Korean-born artist Lee (b. 1936), a leading figure in avant-garde art in Japan (where he has lived since 1956), this catalogue presents some 20 schematic and gestural works on canvas along with an equal number of sculptural installations based on simple arrangements of stones and iron sheets. A critical essay appraises Lee's artistic development and his infusion of Eastern aesthetics and philosophy into works stylistically linked to Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism.
