This chiefly pictorial catalogue presents full-page reproductions of 44 diverse works on paper produced in the 1980s by American artists of three generations: Johns, Rauschenberg and Rosenquist; Nauman, Marden, Bochner, LeVa and Murray; and Carroll Dunham, John Newman and Terry Winters -- all of whom have adopted drawing as a crucial adjunct to their work in other media or as an independent means of expression. A critical essay discusses the drawings in the context of postwar trends and describes the character and significance of each artist's involvement with the medium.
