JANA STERBAK: STATES OF BEING/CORPS A CORPS. Diana Nemiroff. National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 1991. Distributed in the U.S.A. by University of Chicago Press. 96 pp. with 52 ills. (15 col.). 28 x 19 cm. LC 91-186823 ISBN 0888846169 Bilingual in English and French.
Documents 25 works produced over the past decade by Czech-born Canadian artist Sterbak (b. 1955), who explores issues of gender, identity, power and mortality in such varied pieces as a cage-like motorized crinoline operated by remote control, a dress stitched from raw meat, an electrified wire-mesh robe and a transparent glass coffin. A substantial critical essay traces the evolution of Sterbak's introspective oeuvre through explications of individual works, and an interview with the artist illuminates her links to Czech culture and Surrealism.
