Documents an exhibition of 37 chiefly 19th-century French works once part of the impressive collection formed by St. Paul railroad magnate Hill (1838-1916), including paintings by Corot, Courbet, Delacroix, Rousseau, Millet and other artists of the Barbizon school as well as five bronze sculptures by Barye. Three substantial essays provide a scholarly review of art collecting in late 19th-century America, a detailed discussion of the formation of Hill's collection, and a history of the gallery constructed in his home to showcase his acquisitions.
