THE FASCINATION WITH THE PAST: JOHN HENRY PARKER'S PHOTOGRAPHS OF ROME. Peter J. Holliday. University Art Gallery, California State University, San Bernardino, 1991. 110 pp. with 50 ills. 28 x 22 cm. LC 91-8654 ISBN 0945486057 In English.
This catalogue presents fifty 19th-century photographs reflecting the efforts of British architectural historian and antiquarian Parker (1806-1884) to create an accurate record of Roman archaeological ruins, a pioneering project which documented many monuments that have since been destroyed or dramatically altered. Descriptive commentaries and excerpts from ancient sources and 19th-century journals provide historical information on the structures depicted, and an introductory essay discusses Parker's significant role in commissioning and publishing photographs of important sites during a period of rapid urbanization in Rome.
