Emphasizing works related to individuals and events of both regional and national significance from the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony through the Civil War period, this scholarly catalogue documents 161 diverse pieces from the Society's extensive collections, including numerous manuscripts, maps, historical paintings and prints, architectural drawings, commemorative medals, portrait busts and photographs as well as furniture, textiles and other decorative objects. Lengthy commentaries on the exhibited works are prefaced by a discussion of the theories of history appropriated or devised during the early decades of the Republic to reflect its ideals, and a chronicle of the Society's formation and the development of its collections.
