EDWARD QUIGLEY: AMERICAN MODERNIST. Houk Friedman, New York, 1991. 96 pp. with 130 ills. 31 x 23 cm. In English.
Reviewing the achievements of Philadelphia photographer Quigley (1898-1977), once internationally noted for his experimental techniques, this catalogue reproduces 116 images dating chiefly from the 1930s: light abstractions, constructivist photograms, modernist still lifes, and architectural and industrial views influenced by European avant-garde photography of the period. Two critical essays trace Quigley's career as a commercial and fine art photographer and discuss his innovative oeuvre in relation to the work of such figures as Strand, Man Ray and Moholy-Nagy.
