Biographical profiles of some 130 lesser-known artists (primarily painters active during the early decades of the 20th century) are accompanied by reproductions of representative still lifes, portraits and landscapes. The majority of the illustrated works and 50 of the featured artists were not documented in the two 1989 exhibition catalogues also based on the Sellars collection: Paintings by American Women (Worldwide 52694) and Centennial Exhibition, 1889-1989, by Members Past and Present of the National Association of Women Artists (Worldwide 53304).
