JULIA WACHTEL. Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 1991. 44 pp. with 25 ills. (15 col.). 26 x 20 cm. LC 91-9945 ISBN 0933856334 In English.
This slim catalogue documents 16 large canvases from two recent series of works by New York artist Wachtel (b. 1956) which feature buffoonish cartoon figures derived from greeting cards, juxtaposed in one series with images of "primitive" idols and figurines and interspersed in the second among panels of silkscreened documentary photographs of current events and industrial landscapes. Two critical essays consider Wachtel's appropriated kitsch figures as critiques of cultural and sexual stereotypes and her caricatures of excessive emotion as ironic commentaries on the repressiveness of modern society.
