LES ARTISTES DE WORPSWEDE (1889-1935) {The Artists of Worpswede (1889-1935)}. Musee departemental du Prieure, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 1990. Organized and published by Conseil General des Yvelines in association with Landkreis Osterholz. 190 pp. with 164 ills. (103 col.). 28 x 24 cm. ISBN 2906002062 In French.
Surveys the history of the noted North German artists' colony through a selection of some 120 works drawn largely from German collections, including landscapes, studies of rural life, portraits and still-life paintings by nine figures prominent in the colony's first decades (among them Fritz Overbeck, Heinrich Vogeler, Otto Modersohn and Paula Modersohn-Becker) as well as works by fifteen artists later associated with Worpswede, including Expressionist painter Bram van Velde and sculptor Bernhard Hoetger. Four essays discuss the origins of the colony, the association of German poet Rainer Maria Rilke with the group around the turn of the century, the impact of Expressionism on Worpswede artists, and the colony's significance in an international context. Rilke's 1903 essay on landscape painting and numerous brief extracts from writings by Worpswede artists are also included.
