Fine color reproductions of 72 highly expressive oils and acrylics document the achievements of noted Australian painter Tucker (b. 1914), an artist closely associated with the influential Melbourne art periodical Angry Penguins during the 1940s, whose oeuvre encompasses brooding surrealist landscapes, interpretations of Australian and religious themes, and critiques of modern society as well as psychologically acute portraits. A detailed biographical chronology and an interview with the artist illuminate his political and social concerns and the significance of his exposure to German Expressionism, Surrealism and Art Brut during his wide-ranging travels.
