Full-page reproductions of 93 photographs (including poetic images of enigmatic figures posed in decaying Louisiana plantation buildings, multi-layered depictions of display window reflections, close-up studies of natural forms, and evocative architectural views) produced by innovative New Orleans photographer Laughlin (1905-1985) from 1936 to 1964 are presented in this survey of works from the Hallmark Photographic Collection and the Historic New Orleans Collection, published to coincide with a traveling exhibition but including no reference to the show. Three critical essays analyze Laughlin's imaginative documentation of vanishing architectural landmarks and discuss his primary themes and techniques, noting the influence of Surrealism, Symbolist poetry and Gothic fiction on his approach to photography.
