ROSSETTI'S PORTRAITS OF ELIZABETH SIDDAL: A CATALOGUE OF THE DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS. Virginia Surtees. Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, 1991. Published in association with Scolar Press, Aldershot. 64 pp. with 63 ills. 26 x 19 cm. LC 91-8820 ISBN 0859678857 In English.
This catalogue presents 63 pencil sketches, watercolors and pen-and-ink studies by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) depicting his wife Elizabeth Siddal (1829-1862), who was frequently portrayed by Pre-Raphaelite artists as an ideal of melancholic beauty. Two essays discuss Siddal's tragic life and relationship with Rossetti and evaluate the discrepancy between the artist's portraits of Siddal and her real character.
