Documents an exhibition of prints selected from the collection of the Istituto Nazionale, presenting reproductions of some 60 representative etchings of Classical ruins and other architectural subjects by Piranesi (1720-1778) as well as 40 related works by such artists as Canaletto, Luca Carlevarijs, Marco Ricci and Giuseppe Vasi. Three scholarly essays examine the origins and development of the veduta in Rome and Venice and evaluate Piranesi's innovative work in the genre in the context of earlier forms of topographical printmaking.
