MARIO MERZ AT MOCA. Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 1989. Organized in association with Incontri Internazionali d'Arte, Rome. Published in association with Fabbri Editori, Milan. 128 pp. with 82 ills. (38 col.). 28 x 25 cm. LC 89-61695 ISBN 0914357174 In English; prefatory texts and two essays also in Italian.
Focused on a complex site-specific work by noted Arte Povera sculptor Merz (b. 1925), this catalogue features fine pictorial documentation of the three-room installation (composed of full-scale igloo forms, stone slabs, neon number sequences, painted backdrops and chair and table configurations) as well as illustrations of numerous earlier works by the Italian artist. Two essays elucidate the symbolic narrative presented in the installation and examine the themes, archetypal forms and natural materials central to Merz's allusive oeuvre.
